If you follow this approach then it will improve your comprehension, builds problem solving skills and helps you to to remember your knowledge for a longer time. The brain learns them in a most effective way when you do practice , reflect, and connect information to what you already understand.

10 Powerful Active Learning Techniques

1. Self-Explanation –After learning the concepts, you have to teach  yourself in your own words by pretending that you are explaining it to someone like your friend, etc. This will show that whether you are truly understand it or just memorized it. It will forces your brain to do deep thinking and reveals the gaps in understanding. So you just have to record yourself, write short explanations, or explain to a friend. For Example – After reading about supply and demand, explain to yourself in a loud voice that how price changes affect consumer choices, etc.

2. Retrieval Practice (Testing Yourself) – You don’t just have to rereading the information, notes, etc, try to pull that information from your memory by testing yourself with flashcards (physical or apps like Anki), practice quizzes and brain dumps, create mock tests and write everything you know about in a topic before checking the notes. It will strengthen your brain to recall and reduces exam anxiety.

3. Spaced Repetition – Revise your notes after 1 day ,3 days ,7 days and so on . You can use apps like Anki or Quizlet to get the help. These methods will train your brain to remember better and for a long time. Students who use this techinque usually study less and get better results.

4. Elaborative Interrogation – You can ask yourself questions like “why” and “how” while doing studying. So you just have to link your new information by adding ‘why’ and ‘how’ questions in your notes, or by practicing self questioning in a loud voice. For Example: Why does photosynthesis need sunlight? How does it connect to respiration?

5. Interleaved Practice – Instead of focusing yourself in just one topic , you can mix different but related topics. It will improve your flexible thinking to do problem solving. You can switch between the subjects or problem types during your study sessions. Example: While studying math, practice algebra, geometry, and probability in the same session.

6. Teaching Others – You can explain something to others but you have to understand that for teaching someone you need to really understand the concepts that what you are explaining to them. So, you can first explain to yourself in a loud voice that helps you to learn better. Join a study group, teach to your or someone else sibling or explain the concept to a friend, even if they’re not studying the same subject.”

7. Concept Mapping – You can create mind maps or diagrams to link the topics together. So ,start with the main idea in the center and make branches that are having related subtopics. It can help you to combine the creativity and logic, making the complex ideas clear.Use pen/paper or apps like MindMeister or Lucidchart.

8. Real-World Applications – Apply your lessons in real life because real life connections make the information meaningful and memorable. You can write case studies, relate the theories to your personal experiences, or analyze real-world problems. For Example: In economics, connect inflation to current news; in biology, link food digestion to your daily meals, etc.

9. Active Note-Taking – You don’t have to copy word for word by taking notes. Instead of doing this, you can summarize that in your own words, write down key questions and use visual methods like Cornell notes or mind maps. It will encourage your critical thinking and reflection while recording. So,highlight only key points, add symbols (→, Δ, ↑), and review notes within 24 hours.

10. Study Breaks + Movement – Your brain cannot stay focused if you do hours of study without taking any break. Taking short breaks and doing light exercises refreshes your energy because it will prevent burnout and boosts your productivity. You can use Pomodoro method ,i.e., 25 minutes study and 5 minutes break . So, during the breaks, do stretch, walk, or drink water.
